In the wake of the pandemic’s travel restrictions, Glenda and Randy Tuminello, a vibrant couple in their seventies hailing from Spokane, Washington, embarked on an unexpected adventure – retiring to the sun-soaked southern region of Italy. In December 2022, they bid farewell to their American home and set their sights on Polignano a Mare, a captivating white-cliffed town nestled in the scenic Puglia region, celebrated for its breathtaking beaches and turquoise waters.
The onset of the pandemic prompted the Tuminellos to reassess their long-term life plans, inspiring them to seek a tax-friendly haven where they could turn their Italian dreams into reality. Glenda Tuminello, a former high school math teacher and home designer, shared their journey, explaining how they initially envisioned spending a year in Italy to celebrate their retirement before COVID-19 altered their trajectory.
“We decided to sell our home, our car, and all superfluous possessions and make Italy our retirement home for good. We chose beautiful Polignano a Mare; it offered a flat tax rate of 7%, introduced by the government to lure foreign retirees,” Glenda explained.
Their decision was influenced not only by the town’s enticing tax incentives but also by its enchanting historic center, welcoming residents, and coastal location boasting unique and gorgeous views. The Tuminellos found the lifestyle in Polignano a Mare to be not only idyllic but also surprisingly affordable.
One of the town’s standout features, according to Glenda, is its walkability. “We don’t need a car here. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to the train station that could take us anywhere we want to go in Italy, as well as any European country that we want to visit.”
Having embraced their new life, the couple has integrated into the local community, forming connections with fellow American residents and immersing themselves in Polignano’s festive atmosphere. The picturesque piazzas come alive with celebrations and music, creating a vibrant and family-oriented environment.
“Locals bring their lawn chairs out at night to the promenade area by the Adriatic to sit out and talk, visit, laugh into the late hours of the night. It is so lovely, so upbeat, so family-oriented. We never ever feel anything but safe here – [there’s] never a threat of danger walking the beautiful streets at night,” Glenda shared.
As the Tuminellos revel in their Italian adventure, their story serves as an inspiring testament to the transformative power of embracing change and pursuing dreams, even in the midst of unexpected challenges.
