A French senator, Joel Guerriau, has been placed under formal investigation on suspicion of drugging a fellow member of parliament, Sandrine Josso, with the alleged intention of sexually abusing her. The investigation focuses on Guerriau’s suspected administration of a substance to Josso, impairing her discernment or control over her actions, with the intent of committing rape or sexual aggression. Additionally, Guerriau faces charges related to the possession and use of substances classified as drugs. Guerriau has denied the charges, and his lawyer asserted that he will fight to prove his innocence.
The incident reportedly occurred when Josso, a member of the ruling coalition party Modem, felt unwell after drinking a glass of champagne at Guerriau’s residence. She observed him handling a small plastic bag with a white substance, leading her to suspect her drink had been spiked. The reasons for Josso being in the senator’s flat at the time are unclear.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has confirmed the investigation, revealing that Guerriau is under judicial control, preventing him from contacting Josso or witnesses. Guerriau, a member of the conservative Horizons party, part of President Emmanuel Macron’s ruling coalition, has been suspended from the party with immediate effect.
The case highlights the serious allegations of misconduct within political circles, underscoring the need for thorough investigations and legal proceedings to address such matters.
