This was a high-stakes operation involving multiple international organizations, with the newborn being transported by ambulance after intense fighting, despite concerns about whether he would survive.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PCRS) said it worked with several other organizations to transport the infant to al-Helal al-Emirati maternity hospital in the southern Gaza Strip, an Egyptian government official told CNN.
However, he said the infant would be taken to the southern Gaza Strip.
The next day, Monday, was Egypt.
Al Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, became a flashpoint in Israel’s war in the besieged enclave.
The Israeli military attacked the hospital last Wednesday, claiming the facility was being used as a shield for Hamas operations.
Hamas and hospital officials rejected Israel’s claims.
The United Nations Joint Humanitarian Assessment Team visited the hospital for an hour on Saturday and described it as a “death zone”, according to a statement from the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Corridors and hospital grounds are filled with medical and solid waste, increasing the risk of infection.
Patients and healthcare workers we spoke to expressed concerns for their safety and health.
, asked for evacuation,” the statement said.
Days of relentless shelling near hospitals has trapped thousands of staff, patients and civilians indoors, as details emerge of newborns in particular fighting for their lives.
This provoked a public backlash.
The Palestinian Authority says several newborns have died due to power outages and lack of medical care.
Hospital staff reported that they had to manually remove the baby from the incubator and wrap it in foil to keep it warm after the fuel ran out.
The 31 evacuated infants are currently in Rafah, a town in the southern Gaza Strip.
Rafah is located on the border with Egypt, near the Rafah crossing, which was used for limited aid deliveries and the evacuation of foreigners.
Photos taken at the Rafah border on Monday showed Egyptian medical workers standing next to ambulances and incubators waiting for a baby to arrive.
It was hoped that parents of newborns would be able to travel safely with their children, but WHO said very few newborns were accompanied by family members.
Gaza officials had “limited information” and were unable to locate next of kin, the WHO said.
Father Ali Sbeiti is reunited with his girlfriend’s young son Anas, who was born three days before the start of the war.
“Thank God.
My son, who I haven’t seen for over two weeks, feels safe now.
Especially when we lost contact with the doctors, we didn’t know if he was dead or alive.
” Sveiti told CNN.
Intense fighting between Israel and Hamas and communications blackouts across the enclave due to fuel shortages are complicating aid deliveries and making it difficult for Palestinians to reach aid services.
All 31 evacuated infants are battling serious infections, WHO said, citing doctors at Rafah Hospital where they are being treated.
The WHO said 11 of the infants were in a “serious condition”, adding that the infants became ill due to a lack of medical care at Al Shifa Hospital.
“We have carried out tests on all these babies and they have been given fluids and given the necessary medicines depending on their condition,” he said.
Mohammad Salamah, one of the doctors at Al Helal Al Emarati Maternity Hospital.
“At the moment, they are in a difficult and stable situation, but this situation could get worse, especially given the fact that unless fuel reaches Gaza, there could be a power shortage at any time.
” On Sunday, UNICEF, working with other UN agencies and PCRS to carry out the evacuation, warned that the infant’s condition was “rapidly deteriorating”.
