User “Hope is hard to find”: In the Red Sea resort of Eilat, Israeli survivors of the October 7 incident face a new threat.
The horrors of the October 7 Hamas massacre resurfaced as an emergency alarm sounded in the hotel’s busy dining room, causing many children to scatter in fear.
Thousands of families who survived attacks on Israeli collective communities known as kibbutzim are now homeless, taking shelter in hotels on the beaches of the Red Sea resort of Eilat.
But they still face a new threat from another extremist group, the Iranian-backed Houthis.
“Everyone thought Eilat, the southern tip of Israel, would be safe from attack,” said Jonathan Dekel Chen, 60, a resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz.
In recent weeks, the Houthis have claimed several rocket and drone attacks against Israel and warned of further attacks.
Israeli fighter jets and Arrow defense systems were used to protect against missiles and other “air threats” in the Red Sea region.
On November 9, an alarm was sounded in Eilat when a suicide drone landed at a school a few miles from the hotel, but fortunately there were no children in the building at the time.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, but Israel later said the drones had come from Syria and struck locations in Syria in response.
“It was really bad,” Dekerchen said of the repeated alarms.
“You could see the absolute fear in the eyes of all the children, from infancy to teenagers.
It was simply because of the absolute, visceral fear of death that they were experiencing.
Residents themselves are collecting the dead and campaigning for the release of their relatives from captivity in Gaza.
Dekerchen’s 35-year-old son Sagi went missing on October 7, and his family believes he was kidnapped by Hamas.
“I can’t stand it,” Dekel-Cheng said.
“We don’t know if he’s healthy or injured.
We don’t know anything.
.
.
It’s hard to find hope right now.
” Ms Dekerchen is currently living with her two granddaughters.
She is helping take care of her pregnant daughter-in-law and is expecting her third child next year.
several weeks.
After the October 7 attack, Israel declared war on Hamas and bombarded Gaza with rockets from the air, land, and sea, as well as launching ground attacks in late October.
Israel says it is targeting Hamas leadership and its network of underground tunnels, but the impact on Palestinian civilians has been devastating, with more than 12,000 dead, at least 30,000 injured and fuel blockades.
Many hospitals are becoming dysfunctional.
.
As the humanitarian disaster worsens, global protests calling for a pause in fighting have grown, but Israel has declared that a ceasefire cannot be reached without the release of more than 200 hostages held by Hamas.
“I won’t,” he claims.
